I'm watching Voyager with my dad. I'd never seen an episode before, but I'd heard all the talk about how it was the weakest of the shows, almost worse than Enterprise, poor characterization, poorer plots. Etc.
I really don't see any of that here. I see a handful of characters I am fascinated by, three of which are strong interesting women in positions of both ultimate and relative authority.
There are not too many characters to keep track of, as in The Next Generation. There isn't rampant sexism, as in the original series. There isn't the soap opera Babylon Five rip-off structure of Deep Space Nine.
And frankly, I find the plots and trials of the crew of warring people who banded together in unknown territory much more interesting than some old bald dude pontificating about justice or the Prime Directive or whatever. (Sorry J.P. You know I love you. 4 lights 4 eva! Kisses!)
I think it's very likely that the problem with Voyager wasn't the characterization or writing or plot. I think it was that Star Trek is geared towards men, and men were uncomfortable with Cpt. Janeway. Just another case of "If a man does it, he's a badass. If a woman does it, she's a bitch." I'm getting really tired of that.
